| Rods ready to go fishing $850.00. My prices are competitive because I make them so. $850.00 is comparable to the cost of a high end graphite rod, and enough to pay for a bamboo rod. The major difference between my rod and a $1,200.00 rod is $350.00. $350.00 is just about the cost of a Hardy Lightweight and fly line. My goal is to make 10 to 12 rods a year, do some instruction, and a few repair jobs to pay the utilities, keep the shop well supplied, have quality tools and equipment, and finance some bad habits. I have up to date tools and rod making equipment, but do not do a lot of advertising or pay to attend fishing shows. I only sell rods, and some jigs I make in the shop. No reels, no lines, no gizmos. This keeps the overhead (and cost of rods) down. I offer rods made of the best Tonkin cane available, planed to exacting tolerances, finished with high quality hardware components, 6/0 silk thread, and dip finish. I do the tread work, finish the wraps, and then dip the rod. These rods are as good as you will find anyplace. Each rod is made by me - I hand split and plane the cane - your rod is fabricated utilizing established rod making practices. This takes time and effort, all the hardware and components not fabricated by me come from well known and reputable sources. There are no shortcuts in my shop. A rod you can use the rest of your life and pass on to your son or grandson is my goal. I don't make collector pieces - no engraving - no fancy thread work - they are good looking well finished rods - but they are made to fish. As an example - I put substantial finish on the thread and the rod - If one of these rods slides down the side of a boat, dock, or tailgate the idea is finish will peel off - not cane, guides, or thread. $750.00 gets you a two piece rod with ferrule plug, sock, tube, and standard hardware. If you have some special needs or desires we will figure out the cost difference There are several tapers I usually have on hand in 3 to 5 weight rods. They are classic tapers by expert rods makers available in the public domain. I also offer several convex tapers I have developed in 4, 5, and 6 wgt for 7 and 7 foot 6 inch rods. I will make a rod from a specific taper you may want. If you are interested in one of these rods give me a call or e-mail, and we can discuss it, or just talk about rod making. If the rod you have in mind is not one I feel comfortable making - I will recommend a rod maker who may be able to get you what you want. For example I am not set up to do node less rods, hollow build rods, or quads. With proper use and care, a cane rod will last a long time. I want you to have a rod you can use as long as you want to (until you die) and then pass along for some one else to fish with. To that end - if the rod breaks during normal use it will be repaired or replaced for the cost of material, depending on the circumstances. You pay to ship it to me, I pay to ship it back and I work on it as fast as I can and do a good job. If you break the rod in a car door or chasing off a bear, we will figure out a fair cost for the repair or replacement. If you buy one of my rods I feel obliged to give you a fair deal on repairs. I will not charge half the cost of a rod to replace a tip section. Normal use is defined as angling for fish of appropriate size and species for a rod of the size and weight in question. Steel head or Carp fishing with a 3,4, or 5 weight rod is, in my mind, not appropriate. I reckon I will have to take your word here and hope if I price these fairly and deal honestly with you - you will treat me as fairly as I do you. |
